Title: Rhode Island Reds
Theme: 100 Years of Agriculture
What is your artwork about? Agriculture is such an important part of daily life from the food I eat, to the clothes I wear, to the fiber art I create. Everything it seems is impacted by agriculture in some way. I chose the Rhode Island Red chicken to symbolize the idea that some things will remain constant and unchanged with the passage of time despite modern advancements. The Rhode Island Red breed was developed in the 1830's to be a bird with excellent egg laying qualities and also a good meat provider. This breed would be my choice for my backyard.
Materials and techniques used: This cotton panel was painted with fabric paint. The chickens were painted first and then a salt wash was applied to the background. After heat setting the paint, the panel was quilted and bound.

Title: Kansas Agriculture: Past, Present, & Future
Theme: 100 Years of Agriculture

KANSAS AGRICULTURE: PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE
Kansas wheat & barley
Vineyards, corn and rye.
Crystal running water
Under blue expansive sky.
100 years behind us,
100 more ahead.
100 years of farmland
Providing daily bread.
(Poem by Shirley Lewis)
Kansas has long been known for the second-largest amount of farmland in the U.S., good animal health, a conducive climate and a central location with our exports of beef and grains leading the way. Kansas Agriculture is the largest industry in the State.
For our future, The Kansas Dept. of Agriculture points us to the diversity of “providing raw materials for a broad range of nonfood products, such as chemicals, fibers, construction materials, lubricants and fuels. Developing and commercializing biobased and bioenergy products will provide new and expanded markets for agricultural feedstocks.”
Can you pick out the wheat fields, plowed lands, vineyards, sorghum, corn, sunflower and soybean fields, and leas for cattle with the winding rivers?
Materials and techniques used: Fabric, thread, batting
Designed / Machine pieced / quilted by Rosemary Cromer
Inspired by staff at Harper's Fabric & Quilt Co.
Participants: Rosemary Cromer, Elaine Johnson, Shirley Lewis, Julee Hunter
Did your group enjoy participating? Rosemary Cromer and staff all enjoyed the opportunity to relate our backgrounds as it meshed into agriculture. We all have a lot of rural farming experience from our past. It was fun sharing and relating them to the past, present, and future. Thank you for the opportunity.

Title: Clean Water for All
Dream Theme: Conservation
Materials & techniques used: The panel was created using fabric paint and permanent markers.
What is your art about? My dream for a better world would start with clean water. Over 2 billion of our fellow human beings do not have clean water to drink. The process of providing sources of clean water would foster community as those who have travel to help those would do not have and create relationships across geographical, racial and religious lines. The acts of giving and receiving help are essential to mental and spiritual health. Clean water to drink is essential to good physical health. This one area of focus would change our world in profound ways.

Materials & techniques used: Acrylic
What is your art about? This piece represents water quality by showing what our water should look like in the futre. Water is important for wildlife and us human-beings. In my picture water is important sea life needs to live in clear water. If you like to scuba dive you need clear water too. Here are some facts you might want to know about the coral reef are that corral is not a plant it is an animal. Many fish live in the coral reef. Clownfish are the only kind of fish that can live in the anemone. If we did not have clean water we won't have seafood. Water affects everything.

Materials & techniques used: Acrylic
What is your art about? The reason why I chose the future of the sea is because I love the sunset above the sea because it's beautiful. I put the dolphins in the painting because dolphins are so beautiful and it needed something to make it complete. I like drawing sunsets because I like how there are all different colors in the sky at the time of day in my opinion. The reason why I put sparkles is because the sky sparkles in the sunlight. It's dark at the top and it's bright at the bottom.

Title: The Water Cycle
Teacher and organizer: Jennifer Keith
Dream Theme: Water Quality
Materials & techniques used: Acrylic
What is your art about? On my painting I put the large water drop to show the water now and what my dream for the future is. The cycle goes along as it gets browner and browner until it is completely brown. If we don't step it up the water WILL get fully brown and polluted. Hopefully that won't happen. I learned that there could be chemicals in any water you drink. If it is something poisonous it could be very bad and dangerous for our future.

Teacher and organizer: Jennifer Keith
Dream Theme: Water Quality
Materials & techniques used: Acrylic paint
What is your art about? My dream for water quality is crystal clear water that everybody can drink from without getting sick. In my painting it depicts a beautiful lake with deep blue water in the Himalayas in China. I hope that, like this painting, all water will eventually look this untouched, this unpoluted, this beautiful.
Created by Kayla Rende, a 5th grade student at Episcopal High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Title: Sea Water
Teacher and organizer: Jennifer Keith
Dream Theme: Water Quality
Materials & techniques used: Acrylic paint
What is your art about? My work represents the sea water of the Earth. We should work hard to conserve the future of the quality of the ocean water. This is crucial for living creatures.
Created by Students in Mrs. Dana Pippen’s Thursday QUEST Class, at Southeast Elementary, in Meridian, Mississippi
Title: Everything and Everyone Counts
Teacher and organizer: Mrs. Dana Pippen
Dream Theme: Conservation/ Healthy Space
Materials & techniques used: We mostly used fabric paint to create our panel. A few spots were created with sharpies.
Participants: Nicholas, Ethan, Dakota, Madelyn, Braeden, Gabriel, Chase, Jack G., Hannah, Christian, Brianna
What is your art about? We had several different ideas about how we would want to change the world. We decided to paint a globe in the middle of our panel and put the words "change the world" around the globe. Then we divided the panel into sections and drew our different ideas. They were: keeping the oceans and beaches clean, telling people about Jesus, finding better medicines, space exploration, stopping bullying and curing cancer, diabetes and other illnesses. We wrote our theme "Everything and Everybody Counts" in the bottom section of the panel.
Created by Students in Mrs. Dana Pippen’s Wednesday’s QUEST Class, at Southeast Elementary, in Meridian, Mississippi
Title: The World Needs You
Teacher and organizer: Mrs. Dana Pippen
Homeroom: Ms. Read, Mrs. Shelton, and Mrs. Culpepper
Dream Theme: Conservation
Materials & techniques used: We painted the globe, the dream rocket and the stars. We used sharpies to make the people and animals. We wrote the words with sharpies.
Participants: Chandler, Gracie, RaMya, Jack, Eli, Branderrious, Jeremiah and Mrs. Pippen
What is your art about? We began with 7 different ideas. We worked to find a way to combine all the ideas. We decided to draw a dream rocket that has a peace sign designed in the bottom. Then we decided to draw the dream rocket going across a globe to represent our planet. We drew people and animals around the outside of the globe to represent the people and animals who will have happier lives if we live in peace together and take care of nature. Last, we wrote the words for our title and drew stars in the sky around the globe.
Created by Students in Mrs. Dana Pippen’s Monday QUEST Class, at Southeast Elementary, in Meridian, Mississippi
Title: Save People and Animals
Teacher: Mrs. Dana Pippen
Homeroom: Mrs. Turk and Mrs. Yount
Dream Theme: Conservation
Materials & techniques used: We used fabric paint and sharpies to create our panel.
Participants: Amber, Deanna, Ami, Sophia, Faith, La'Kiera, Diego, Daniel, Joseph, and Mrs. Pippen.
What is your art about? We began with 9 separate ideas. As we began to work on combining our ideas, we realized that all 9 ideas were related to conservation. We decided to paint the Earth with a heart over Mississippi because that is our state. Then we added plants, animals and people to our artwork. Last, we added our "Save People and Animals" as our title and loving each other and living in peace with each other is the way we will save the people and animals of our world.
Created by 4th grade students in Mrs. Winki Allen’s Thursday Quest Class at Southeast Elementary School in Meridian, Mississippi
Title: Save the Animals

What is your art about? As a group we elected to focus on animals, both endangered and non-endangered. We each wanted to chose our own animal to draw, and then wanted to highlight our state, MISSISSIPPI. We put the state on a round black circle representing earth. One student chose the endangered MS Sandhill Crane to go in the middle of Mississippi. We placed water animals near the bottom and land animal from the middle to the top.

Title: It's About the Land
Dream Theme: 100 Years of Agriculture; Past, Present, and Future
Did you enjoy working on this project? I loved every minute of this project. I don't find enough time for art quilt projects because I make many traditional quilts each year for various projects. I will do more art quilts in the future.
Materials and techniques used: This project is totally machine pieced. I used a crazy quilt technique with a muslin foundation to make each section of the project. Fibers are couched over seam lines to enhance the Map. The fabrics are mostly cotton, but there are satins, silks and blends.
What is your submission about? I used crazy quilt techniques to show the diversity of the Kansas landscape and the crops that are grown here. Below the state "map" there is a subterranean section revealing layers of soil, rock, petroleum and water. Above the map is the wide open sky with a bright sun. I wanted to show the diversity of our state, which is far more interesting and beautiful than most people realize.

Created by Antonio and Julia Smith-Plata (family project) from Payson, AZ
Title: Arizona Centennial Celebration

Participants:
Antonio Smith-Plata (age 9) and Julia Smith-Plata (age 6) designed and created the panel – I am their Nana (Pamela Smith) -- I provided the supplies for the project, contacted Sue Coccia for permission to use her art and paid the fee.
Dream Theme: Conservation (Nature, animals, etc)
Materials and Techniques Used:
With permission from Sue Coccia -- colored some of her art panels with watercolor pencils. Scanned them into the computer and printed them onto fabric. Used steam a seam 2 to fuse the pictures onto a background fabric. Added a border. Quilted the project. Bound the edge with yarn fibers.
What is your artwork about?
We are Antonio (age 9) and Julia (age (6). We made a quilt panel with our cousins and our Nana two years ago. Now that we are older we wanted to try to do one by ourselves – next year is the Arizona centennial – wit permission we used Sue Coccia art pages with a southwest theme for our quilt. The border is a specially designed Arizona centennial fabric. We hope our quilt is chosen to be shown in Phoenix as we live there. We have done some sewing before and wanted to try a quilt. It was fun and we like how it turned out. We plan to do another one for ourselves.
