Title: Our Hopes and Dreams

Theme: Peace

Materials and Techniques:
We used gessoed canvass, acrylic paints, cans, garbage bags, and paint pens in this project. Our project is 3-D, so we glued our cut out rocket onto our base piece after stuffing it with bags. Then we used tin cans to wrap our rocket's flames around. The rest of the painting was painted with tints and shades. We experimented with adding whites and blacks to colors to create an evolving feeling with our background. The painting was done by students.
What is your artwork about?
Students chose a rocket soaring into outer space as their subject matter. The rocket has a peace symbol on it as it flies past planets into the universe, to signify our dreams to achieve universal peace. Strips of fabric are used as a boarder on the top and bottom with inspirational words written on them. Students brainstormed to choose the right words, such as "peace," "joy," "love." 3rd and 4th grade students drew their idea of the person who should be the one to be in the rocket. We had many very creative ideas, eventually picking Joey Tribiani's drawing. Joey drew a man with a handlebar mustache in a space suit with a peace sign. All Monte Sano students K-5 participated in this project.

Joey Tribiani is a 5th grade student at Monte Sano Elementary School and had a large role to play in creating this artwork, Joey’s thoughts on this submission….

Question One: Joey, How did you decide to draw the man with the handlebar mustache for our Dream Rocket?  Was there any reason you chose to have him look the way he did?
Joey: In honor of my great-great grandfather, Onofrio Papasadora, because that is how he looked.
Question Two:  Joey, What do you think about the Dream Rocket that we designed?  What does it mean to you?
Joey: In the far future, that is how one of my future ancestors will look like, my ancestor in space.

Did your group enjoy working on this project?
We greatly enjoyed working on this project! The very idea behind the project is what inspired us. The thought that art can bring us all together is inspiring in itself. We loved the process of brainstorming words, ideas, images of a unifying peace. Students and parents have been happy with the product, as well. Thanks for allowing us to participate in this project!
Do you have any other ideas of projects that we could do that would involved art and collaboration?
Creating mobiles for department stores nation-wide. These mobiles could have portraits of individuals from all different cultures, flags from all different nations, animals from all different places, etc.

Participants:
Elizabeth Seifried - Art Teacher,

Joey Viviani - Designed and painted the person inside the rocket.
Lisa Rabban and her children worked after school on it.
Meleah Horton glued it together.

Title: “Peace, Love, Girl Scouts”

Dream Theme: Peace

What is your troop’s artwork about?
I found the Dream Rocket project very inspirational!  Beyond discussing the importance of global collaboration (in art and many other things) with the troop, I also used the project as an opportunity for them to learn more about NASA.  They learned about astronauts who were Girl Scouts, including one from our home state of Tennessee.
They also learned about the Saturn V moon rocket, Apollo missions and the space shuttle missions.  I also ordered cinnamon basil seeds, both earth based and some that had flown on a space shuttle, and each Girl Scout 'experimented' by trying to grow both.  A few months later we used the basil on pizzas that we enjoyed at camp!  (seeds available at http://corecatalog.nasa.gov/item.cfm?num=300.0-83C)

The Girl Scouts also had a wonderful time creating their mini-panels which were combined to make the larger panel.  They used fabricpaint, markers and crayons; as well as ribbon, pom-poms and pipe cleaners.  There is also a little frog button which was attached to show the troop's support of the FROG, "Friends and Relatives of Girl Scouts", program which allows Girl Scouts to raise money to help those without the means to join Girl Scouts.
Thank you so much for the inspiration!
I can't wait to travel to Atlanta in January and see the troop's panel displayed at the Imagine It museum!

"Peaceful Planet"
Dream Theme: Peace
Materials and Techniques Used: Raw Canvas and Acrylic Paint
What is your artwork about?
“If I were given one wish, it would be for World Peace. I also think that in order to achieve world peace, we need to care for our planet's health.
My panel is a graphic representation of our planet with the sea below and the sky above. A large peace symbol is centered on the green earth, with symbols in the top and words below. Although some symbols can have many meanings, the following are the ones in my thoughts.”
1. Circle with a line: water; necessary for life.
2. Quartered circle: a sacred space or sacred earth; also the Celtic Cross.
3. Yin-Yang: universal harmony and global unity.
4. Propeller with a “no” symbol over it: no radiation. The symbol for no nuclear energy was too complicated for the 2” diameter circle. However, I am also thinking of that.
5. Arrows in a circle: recycle. I am also thinking of reduce and reuse.
6. Circle with a dot: creative spark of divine consciousness.
7. Empty circle: unity, wholeness, infinity, the feminine spirit, a sacred space and the spirit of mother earth.

of purity and revival.
The dreams of the great future may swing as a cork-tumbler, but they are still firm and steady, because there must be just a few things for the real happiness: warm sunbeams, pure seawater and the space that is explored by the good people.

Title –“Reflection”

Dream Theme-Peace

Materials & Techniques Used: Filet crocheted white cotton crochet thread.

What is your artwork about?
My original intention in making this panel was to showcase the physical beauty of “Peace” as a word as a reflection of its beauty as a concept. The delicate nature of filet crochet made it the media of choice to express this intention When “fine-tuning” started to take months instead of days, I realized that I had to abandon the pursuit of perfection and start crocheting the panel. The end result may have flaws in symmetry and spacing but the overall effect is still a celebration of Peace as art.
The beautiful take away from this experience is that it doesn’t matter how peace evolves, just that it begins.”

Did you enjoy working on this project? “Yes, it is always a pleasure to participate in something that makes the individual a part of the whole yet maintain their own voice.”

What other projects could the IFC do? Giant globe covered in fabric art handprints. Blue & Green shades or rainbow.

“Join Hands for Peace
Dream Theme: Peace
Organizer: Maryellen J. Keogh
Techniques & Materials Used: Hands were traced on fabric and cut out and joined on to the main panel; lettering was done with fabric paints
What is your artwork about?
The girls traced their hands on different colored fabrics. After they were cut out, the hands were arranged on the orange panel in the form of the Peace Symbol, each hand overlapping the other. The bottom on the Peace Symbol is left open providing space for more helping hands to join in the process of peace, and all are invited to join in.
Peace is possible if everyone makes the decision to work towards it. You begin with yourself, developing a peaceful heart. Keep some peace and pass the rest on to the next person, perhaps in your family, your friends, your neighborhood and keep going, keep inviting people to join hands, helping to bring peace to our world.
Participants: The Girl Scouts of Holy Name include Troops 2356, 2226, 2359, 2402 and 2029

“Signs of Peace and Promise”
Dream Theme: Peace
Organizer: Maryellen J. Keogh
Techniques & Materials Used: Letters were drawn and colored with fabric paint; Symbols were drawn on fabric or cut out of fabric and put together on a green fabric background; Green represents the color hope. All pieces were sewn together.
What is your artwork about? The girls used the Peace Symbol, the Peace Sign and the Girl Scout Promise Sign to tell their story. The world is represented in the Peace Symbol and is surrounded by the hand signs of peace and Girl Scouts offering the Girls Scout sign, which is used for a number of things including the recitation of the Girl Scout Promise.
The Girl Scout promise is a commitment to duty and service. When the girls were planning their design their formula was simple. Service, as promised by Girl Scouts when they raise their right hands making the Girl Scout sign + the signs of peace = love for one another and our world.
All the signs, Peace, the Girl Scout Promise and the World are placed on a huge heart. This heart is surrounded by the Holy Name Girl Scouts, who are trying to do their part to work towards peace for the love of the world and all those in it.
Participants: Girl Scouts of Holy Name Brooklyn include Troops 2356, 2226, 2359, 2402 and 2029.

Title -"Dream of Peace"
Dream Theme - Peace
Techniques & Materials Used: Digitally altered woodcut print, digitally printed on vinyl

Tell us the story behind your artwork -

I am fascinated by the image of the crow in Native American stories from the Pacific Northwest — intelligent and mysterious they act as intermediaries between human beings and higher powers — they symbolize flight both spiritually and physically.

The crow in this panel began as a trial proof for a large format woodcut print. I wanted to create a panel for the Dream Rocket using traditional printmaking techniques, but I also wanted to be sure it was weather resistant — in the end I digitally altered the original image and printed it onto vinyl. It seems fitting that this piece incorporates ancient techniques with computer technology as it represents the eternal dream of peace.
