★By the Members of the Westchester Art Therapy Association (WATA) created this panel.
From Mamaroneck, New York
Dream Theme – Imaginationa / The Arts
★Title – “Imagination The Portal to Creativity”
While not all members of WATA were present for the creation of this panel we hope it speaks to the collective voice of our group.
★As art therapists we recognize, the importance of one’s imagination and creativity for invention, research, and working through social issues, environmental issues, self-exploration and self-awareness.
“Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight.”(www.americanarttherapyassociation.org/aata-aboutus.html)
★Our dream for the future is that the creative arts will be recognized as one of the primary forces of our growth and development as individuals, as a country and community of countries-our world and our universe. Through mainstreaming the use of the arts, incorporating them into our everyday life, we are enabled (as will be future generations) to explore, express and create new ideas, as well as to learn more about others and ourselves.
★Imagination and creativity play a role in every aspect of our lives. We hope this is not overlooked. Our dream is that more art making opportunities are afforded to future generations in order to allow imaginations to flourish. With value placed on imagination and creativity, we can continue to be leaders in inventions (medical, technology, ecological, etc), research, working through social, community and world issues, environmental issues, as well as supporting personal awareness, growth and development.
★When we use our imagination amazing things happen.
