Title – “Butterflies are Free”
My dream theme is… Freedom
The story behind my panel:
This is a memory quilt for my sister, Barbara Parry Elston (7/21/41-9/21/10). Her obituary picture was taken of her about 5 years ago when she went to a Butterfly Pavilion where a swarm of butterflies alighted on her. She described the experience as a great feeling of peace that overcame her.
Barbara felt trapped in a body that was quickly deteriorating. She lived in constant physical and emotional pain. However, when the butterflies all grouped around her, she felt no pain! For her memorial service, she was cremated and her remains were placed in a beautiful cobalt blue urn that was decorated with enameled butterflies. Then Barbara got to travel in her urn from Upstate New York to Florida in a red convertible.
Barbara now resides near the ocean where she also felt peace. The family is hopeful to hold another memorial service to release her spirit to the ocean where she will be free to swim with the dolphins.
Techniques Used & Materials Used: I used the watercolor technique that involves placing 2″ pre-cut cotton squares onto a grid and sewing 1/4″ seams following the lines on the grid on the reverse side. Then, I fused butterflies onto the face of the quilt.
Did you enjoy this project? YES!!!!!!
What other kind of IFC project could we do? I would like to see a project that incorporates a variety of textile media (aka knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, quilting, etc.). It might be nice to make garments that could be sent to people in need.
