“We are Water”
Dream Theme: Space, Science, Technilogy, and Conservation.
Techniques & Materials Used: Applique, decorative sewing, embroidery, and quilting with cotton and PolySheen embroidery threads, on cotton fabric and cotton batting, sewn with a Bernina Artista 200 sewing/embroidery machine, center embroidery designed with Bernina Software V6.
What is your artwork about? “My dream is for clean accessible water for everyone. My panel is in recognition of water conservation here on Earth, coinciding with that piece of NASA’s interplanetary mission which is to seek out other sources of water.
The quilt blocks used in the embroidery design comprising the body of the rocket include the Log Cabin and the Friendship Star. The Log Cabin block represents stability and the safe haven of home while conjuring the pioneers who braved the unknown to carve out lives based on self reliance. The Friendship Star is a statement of faith in, and responsibility to, our fellows; an olive branch to others, serving as a reminder of the power of two, which is echoed in the two triangles at the top of the rocket. The Red White and Blue rectangles followed by the Mariner’s Compass represent the spirit of our country’s space program and the fire of humanity’s unquenchable desire to keep going.”
Did you enjoy this project? Yes, Ironically it really made me “stretch” in order to reduce and summarize into one vision one of so many possible ideas into a small piece.
What other IFC projects could we do? Tribute in Fiber to 9/11 Ten-Year Anniversary in Central Park
