About: Students researched the many different forms of life above ground and below ground in Mammoth Cave National Park. They used two processes to create their images: drawing and printmaking. They used two types of printmaking: relief and Gyotaku. For the relief prints the students chose an animal or plant that are present in Mammoth Cave National Park. Once they had chosen an image they drew the image in a Styrofoam plate and printed the image. They decided to create one piece that was just the black and white images of their prints and then a second using different colored inks to create a quilt like pattern. For the Gyotaku prints students looked at the different types of fish plates that we had available and then chose the ones that were species of fish that are present in the Green and Nolin Rivers that are in the park. The students then used the fish plates to print two images; one that was laid out in a more realistic manner and another that was more in a contemporary design. Students then used Crayola Art Stix and Construction Paper Crayons to create the background around the fish prints. For the last two images students chose the entrance to the park and the entrance to the cave to illustrate the journey of Mammoth Cave above and below ground. Students used Crayola Art Stix and Construction Paper Crayons to create the images.
