Title: “Tar Beach” Inspired Night Skies

Theme: Your Night Sky, Astronomy

Materials and techniques: Students used many materials and skills for this project…Materials included blue construction paper, yellow construction paper, pencils, scissors, glue, white colored pencils, and patterned paper. Skills that were used for this project include drawing, cutting, pasting, and critical thinking.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes, the children learned a great deal and also enjoyed working on the project as well!

About: After reading and discussing the book “Tar Beach” by Faith Ringgold, students created a version of their very own night sky through the art process of collage. Students discussed the importance of Faith Ringgold as well as various objects that we may discover when looking at the skyline of a city. Vocabulary words included skyscrapers, street lights, traffic lights, collage, pattern, and astronomy.
