Did you enjoy this project? My students immediately related to this project. Their lives and hearts revolve strongly around those American heroes who serve our country. Every one of them has either sacrificed their time with their own family member or knows a friend who has. They really enjoyed conveying this with their own paintings.
About: I introduced this project to my students by a class discussion of what makes a hero.
We watched “Kid President” to be inspired https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgF1Enrgo2g
His video is very encouraging and reflective on the fact that there is a hero in all of us.
Next, as a class, we came up with words that describe a hero. I wrote them all on the board. Finally, students started creating their work with pencil and paint. The only guidelines I gave them were to make sure their art represented an “American Hero” and that they incorporated 3 specific parts. They could do this in any way they would like. They needed to include a flag, a word, and fireworks.
