About: With the help of The Mammoth Cave National Park Service, the students and I were able research our assigned theme, 200 Years of Guides at Mammoth Cave. Some of the students were lucky enough to have visited the park in the past and that was very helpful with brainstorming.
First, we came up with some categories relating to Mammoth Cave National Park and then voted on our favorites. The final categories chosen by the students for our submissions were “Nature” and “The Cave”.
From there, we put together a list of items that could be used to create a visual for each category. Some of the items they came up with for “Nature” included specific plants, animals, rivers and insects, while items for “The Cave” included rock formations, animals that live in the cave, etc.
After brainstorming, each child sketched their idea and then created it with fabric, yarn, embroidery thread and ribbons. Some students sewed their pieces together, while others used glue. Once they were all completed, one of our school volunteers stitched their art pieces together. You will see these themes throughout the artwork.
