Title: Coal: from mountains to train to home

Teacher: Mrs. Haigh

Theme: Coal to Steam

Materials and techniques: Canvas, pencil, oil pastels, and charcoal.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes. The students enjoyed learning about coal, conducting science experiments and using new art supplies, especially the charcoal which could be rubbed on.

About: Each child was challenged to draw where they envisioned coal could take them in the future. Our two youngest students were excited to have steam trains jet set them into outer space. Several older children wanted a steam train to take them to faraway places, like Mount Everest. One student explained how coal was made into electricity to power a ceiling fan. Lastly, a student was fascinated by the heat generated while burning the coal and drew a steam train loaded with coal as well as a fire heating a house.
