Title: Full Steam Ahead
Teacher: Mrs. Cipriani
Materials and techniques: A 10ft drop cloth that was purchased from Lowes was cut into 2.5-ft x 2.5-ft squares. Students measured and taped off 2-ft squares. They were assigned a train car to draw, and then painted them with acrylics. The entire class was involved, with all different abilities and levels. I have six tables in my room, with nearly 30 students in each class. Each table rotated throughout the week, giving each group about 5 minutes to work on it per day.
Did you enjoy this project? My students loved this!
About: The theme we worked on was “Full Steam Ahead.” My 7th graders came up with the idea after showing them photographs I took at the Steamtown Site in Scranton. After an in-depth discussion, my students decided each class should create a one train car each, so that when they are put together it will make one long train car. They liked the idea that even though they are separated into classes, they can still work together as an entire 7th grade class.
