Title: Steamtown Rocket to Mars

Teacher: Mrs. Phillips

Theme: From Coal to Steam

Materials and techniques: Mixed Media, acrylic paint, and glossed images.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes.

About: My artwork is about the technology of steam power and our community in Scranton. I decided to use an image of the Steamtown mall which also represents the International Space Station floating in space. There is an old picture of a man working on the rocket and it is headed towards Mars. NASA is like its own planet with Earth below.

Title: Tracks

Teacher: Mrs. Phillips

Theme: From Coal to Steam

Materials and techniques: Mixed media; acrylic paint, markers, watercolor washes, and glossed image.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes..

About: I wanted to show my love of cartoons with the man in the coal cart shooting out of the mine into space. I decided to show the coal on Earth that powers the steam locomotives and also show space and Mars. The Hubble Space Telescope is floating through space and Mars has the rover picture. The tracks from the train and in the mine represent the tracks of the future on Mars. Old and new technologies are represented.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes, needed more time.

About: Full steam ahead is the theme for this artwork. I wanted to show new and old with Scranton’s steam locomotive and the NASA rocket. There is an old picture of the Radisson Hotel in Scranton where the train station is attached. There is one point perspective with the railroad tracks leading to the rocket showing how technology has advanced.

Title: National Park

Teacher: Mrs. Phillips

Theme: From Coal to Steam

Materials and techniques: Mixed media; glossed images, acrylic paint, and marker.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes, we loved looking through the NASA folders.

About: We discussed the power of steam, our composition, Mars, NASA, and Steamtown. I liked that Steamtown is an official national historic site so close to home. I added a picture of that and a picture of the Nicholson Bridge further north, which is an important and very scenic bridge for trains to cross.

Teacher: Mrs. Phillips

Theme: From Coal to Steam

Materials and techniques: Mixed media; acrylic paint, markers, and watercolor wash.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes, we loved the donated canvas material.

About: I wanted to show an old steam locomotive. Our theme is; full steam ahead. I thought of adding a full moon behind it to make a circular composition with one point perspective tracks coming forward. It also combines space with Earth.

Title: Where to next?

Teacher: Mrs. Phillips

Theme: From Coal to Steam, Full Steam Ahead

Materials and techniques: Mixed media, pen, markers, acrylic paint and glossed images.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes, just wish I had more time.

About: My artwork is about children playing and dreaming about where their dreams will take them. The Scranton factories are in the distance powered by steam and the child in the front is playing in a cardboard box to represent the steam locomotive. The child standing is imagining he is an astronaut flying through space.
