Title: Hard Hearing

Teacher: Mr. Schilling

Materials and techniques: Materials used were: charcoal, graphite, t-bags, black Sharpie, black and red construction paper, on the provided canvas.

Students created a wash using the t-bags to create a historical feel to the canvas. One student hand-wrote the letters as another filled in the canvas with the portrait of Edison when he was older. Once they were finished, they both worked on creating the small cardinal that is singing in Edison’s ear and added any necessary decorations.

Did you enjoy this project? Both students and teacher enjoyed working on this project. This project provided some insight into the life of Edison and I personally learned a lot about Edison that I did not know about before. The students were having fun using techniques that they did not have an opportunity to try before and they were completely free to choose the materials they needed to represent their message.

About: This composition was about how Edison could hardly hear, as he once said, “I have not heard a bird sing since I was twelve years old.”
