Theme: Diversity in Our Town

Materials and techniques: Acrylic paint.

Did you enjoy this project? The students found this piece more difficult to express and to paint. They like the result but recognized the challenges of expressing this idea.

About: This piece is about the economic Diversity within the town. Often people outside of Lincoln see it as an expensive place to live. In this town there is a range of incomes that spread from very high to low income. One idea was for the students to represent this contrast. The students recognize that when they enter the school they are all equal and have the same access to education, friendships and emotional stability.

Title: Our Landscape

Teacher: Mrs. DiBiase

Theme: Diversity in Our Town

Materials and techniques: Acrylic paint.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes, they enjoyed envisioning their perspective on the space around them.

About: Students wanted to represent the diversity within nature. Often the students feel Lincoln is a remote “boring” place. They feel like they are in the woods. So instead of seeing the space around them as repetitive they decide to look at their surrounding with fresh eyes and decided they wanted to represent the diversity of wildlife, trees, plants and animals with the landscape.

Title: Commuters vs. Nature

Teacher: Mrs. DiBiase

Theme: Diversity in our Town

Materials and techniques: Acrylic paint.

Did you enjoy this project? They loved working on this piece and representing the many hiking trails and farm life.

About: Lincoln is an old farm town. While there are not many farms still in operation we still have Codman Farm run by a local co-op. Codman welcomes people to visit and engage with the farm animals and hosts many local events. In the background behind the cow pasture runs the Commuter Rail, the T, which heads into Boston packed filled with business people and students headed to the city. The students were struck by the juxtaposition of the town’s original economic base of farming with the amount of people that commute into Boston for work.

Title: Friendship

Teacher: Mrs. DiBiase

Theme: Diversity in our Town

Materials and techniques: Acrylic paint.

Did you enjoy this project? They loved designing and painting the figures in this piece.

About: This piece represents friendship between the students. We wanted to represent the ethnic and religious diversity in our town and our school. This year a local Mosque had racial slurs written upon its outer surfaces. Several of our students were directly impacted by this horrible act. The students in our school responded in a positive way showing not only support for the Muslim community but also for the commitment to learning and respecting the rich diversity within our town.
