Title: Roger Williams Meets Basquiat

Teacher: Mrs. McMurtery

Theme: Dangerous Ideas

Materials and techniques: Canvas, paint, markers, and glue.

Did you enjoy this project? The students worked on these 3 middle pieces together, and were excited about showing a progression of their ideas. They liked the fact that they were able to incorporate music into their final piece.

About: As our 5 pieces came together, and we literally wove together the ideas and images that we had been working on, the idea of caged birds and ultimate freedom, both physically and with our “Dangerous Ideas” really started to take shape. We looked at the Song Freebird, by Lynrd Skynrd, and Sean decided to insert a few of the lyrics into our work, since they worked perfectly with our theme. A la Jean-Michel Basquiat, we appropriated the words of this song, to drive home the point of our artwork.

Theme: Dangerous Ideas

Materials and techniques: Fabric swatches, marker, canvas, and paint.

Did you enjoy this project? The first and last panel of this work were created last, after all of the group work, to tell the story as cohesively as possible. When the group came up with the idea of birds to represent Roger Williams and his followers; at first caged, but finally free, they were excited, and very happy with the final result.

About: We thought about Roger Williams and his “Dangerous Ideas” and how he must have felt while still living in Massachusetts. Ray, one of our Birch Academy students, drew these sweet birds, so we enlarged them and cut them out of fabric. We then cut up one of the group murals we had created to depict the cage that he must have felt he lived in. We used pieces of the canvas in works 2,3 & 4 to complete the cage in work #1.

Did you enjoy this project? The Birch Academy students absolutely loved the weaving part of this project. They worked instinctively, rather than looking for a planned outcome, and were very happy with the results.

About: As our project continued, and we were visited by Sparkle Bryant, who shared many interested facets of Roger Williams and his exit from Massachusetts, we began to weave parts of his story into our artwork. Eventually, we decided to literally WEAVE his story together, and we cut up 2 of our graffiti canvases, and wove them into the remaining 2. The result is a beautiful mix of ideas and images that works both literally and figuratively with our “Dangerous Ideas” theme.

Did you enjoy this project? This was like a free for all, with students loving the freedom of writing and drawing whatever came to mind. Some students had a lot to say; others just wanted to write their name. A new student, Sean, joined our class just as this project was getting underway, and he really led the rest of us to this final work.

About: We started with the history of Roger Williams, and his “Dangerous Ideas”, which got him kicked out of Massachusetts and compelled him to found Providence, RI, where people could believe in whatever they wanted (or didn’t want). Sean looked for an artist with the same kind of attitude as Mr. Williams, and he found Jean-Michel Basquiat. We used Basquiat’s artistic style of graffiti, bold color, drawings & writing to create each of the middle 3 pieces.
