Title: “Peace, Love, Girl Scouts”

Dream Theme: Peace

What is your troop’s artwork about?

I found the Dream Rocket project very inspirational! Beyond discussing the importance of global collaboration (in art and many other things) with the troop, I also used the project as an opportunity for them to learn more about NASA. They learned about astronauts who were Girl Scouts, including one from our home state of Tennessee.

They also learned about the Saturn V moon rocket, Apollo missions and the space shuttle missions. I also ordered cinnamon basil seeds, both earth based and some that had flown on a space shuttle, and each Girl Scout 'experimented' by trying to grow both. A few months later we used the basil on pizzas that we enjoyed at camp! (seeds available at http://corecatalog.nasa.gov/item.cfm?num=300.0-83C)

The Girl Scouts also had a wonderful time creating their mini-panels which were combined to make the larger panel. They used fabricpaint, markers and crayons; as well as ribbon, pom-poms and pipe cleaners. There is also a little frog button which was attached to show the troop's support of the FROG, "Friends and Relatives of Girl Scouts", program which allows Girl Scouts to raise money to help those without the means to join Girl Scouts.

I can't wait to travel to Atlanta in January and see the troop's panel displayed at the Imagine It museum!
