Title: Dreaming of DNA
Dream Theme: Science / Technology
Participants: Dr. Chris Gunter and Dr. Neil Lamb
Materials & Techniques Used: Cotton fabric, Blue shiny sequin fabric, Good old sewing
What is your artwork submission about?
We are a nonprofit, biotechnology institute located in Huntsville, Alabama, and of course we had to participate in the Dream Rocket project. Our mission includes developing high-throughput research tools that focus on why disease occurs; working to rapidly apply this knowledge to help patients; and educating the students, teachers and citizens of Alabama on the benefits of biotechnology. So we chose to make a bright shiny DNA double helix for our panel.

Title: “We Are All...”
Dream Theme: Equality
Materials and Techniques Used: Hand sewn and machine sewn thread on fabric.
Story behind artwork:
“When making this work, I wanted to find a new way to represent equality. Scott McCloud says that the abstracted figure is easier for people to identify with. I felt that by representing people by shapes and colors that I could give people a new way to view the world that puts equality into a new light. All of the shapes, colors, and pairings are different, yet they all have things in common. I want people to look at this piece and think about all those shapes and colors and to assign their own roles for each color and shape, and to then think about what they all are.”

Title –“Reflection”
Dream Theme-Peace
Materials & Techniques Used: Filet crocheted white cotton crochet thread.
What is your artwork about?
My original intention in making this panel was to showcase the physical beauty of “Peace” as a word as a reflection of its beauty as a concept. The delicate nature of filet crochet made it the media of choice to express this intention When “fine-tuning” started to take months instead of days, I realized that I had to abandon the pursuit of perfection and start crocheting the panel. The end result may have flaws in symmetry and spacing but the overall effect is still a celebration of Peace as art.
The beautiful take away from this experience is that it doesn’t matter how peace evolves, just that it begins.”
Did you enjoy working on this project? “Yes, it is always a pleasure to participate in something that makes the individual a part of the whole yet maintain their own voice.”
What other projects could the IFC do? Giant globe covered in fabric art handprints. Blue & Green shades or rainbow.

Title: “At the Summit”
Dream Theme: Celebrating Life
The essence of Adam was as a ball of light. He was willing, in a loving way, to take risks, never at anyone's detriment, but just for fun and adventure. "Life is an adventure!"(like climbing the mountain), was kind of a signature slogan of his.
This art work depicts the New York City skyline Before, During, and After September 11th, 2001.
I painted the NYC skylines and then made transfers from scanning the paintings. The photos of Adam were of a life celebrated by doing what he loved. The photo of NYC with the "angel cloud" was sent to Melissa after 911 by someone who had heard her story. She now writes a column for the Birmingham news called, Good News Melissa.
Losing her son in the September 11th attacks created a desire in her to share positive things people are doing with their lives and in the community.
Thank you, Melissa for sharing your son's story and photos!
This work would not have been accomplished without your part in it.
..Celebrating This Life- Thank you, Adam

Title: "Words of the Aftermath”
Theme: Created as part of our 911 themed show
What is your artwork about?
In the center is a free-hand machine embroidered iconic picture of the ruins of the twin towers. Glow-in-the-dark thread was used so in darkness the image appears almost ghostly. Words are all around the image (drifting like the reams of paper floating down after the bombing). The words include feelings, vocabulary, and ideas expressed in the aftermath of 9-11. Many of the words were taken from the letter I wrote to myself one week after the tragedy. Some words are bold and others are faint in an effort to entice the viewer to look closely at the piece? Around the border of the quilt are the names of some of the victims: male and female, common and unusual, representing those who died in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania, and across nationalities. It is quilted in a plain grid pattern designed to evoke strength.
It is simple, somber, and I hope powerful. It was a great honor to make this panel and I'm glad The Dream Rocket Project offered such a wonderful opportunity.
It is a pleasure to continue to see all of the new panels and watch as the panels travel around the country bringing the messages of the participants and the project to many people. And, as always, communicating with you is a joy.
Thanks for all you have done and continue to do.

Title:
"Peaceful Planet"
Dream Theme: Peace
Materials and Techniques Used: Raw Canvas and Acrylic Paint
What is your artwork about?
“If I were given one wish, it would be for World Peace. I also think that in order to achieve world peace, we need to care for our planet's health.
My panel is a graphic representation of our planet with the sea below and the sky above. A large peace symbol is centered on the green earth, with symbols in the top and words below. Although some symbols can have many meanings, the following are the ones in my thoughts.”
1. Circle with a line: water; necessary for life.
2. Quartered circle: a sacred space or sacred earth; also the Celtic Cross.
3. Yin-Yang: universal harmony and global unity.
4. Propeller with a “no” symbol over it: no radiation. The symbol for no nuclear energy was too complicated for the 2” diameter circle. However, I am also thinking of that.
5. Arrows in a circle: recycle. I am also thinking of reduce and reuse.
6. Circle with a dot: creative spark of divine consciousness.
7. Empty circle: unity, wholeness, infinity, the feminine spirit, a sacred space and the spirit of mother earth.
Ann's Artwork is scheduled to travel too:
1. 911 Tribute Show in NYC
2. Houston Public Library Show in TX
3. Mundy Library in Syracuse, NY
4. Hudson Branch Library in NYC

Techniques and Materials Used: Computer images printed onto fabric, stencil ironed onto calico, and cut and sewn onto backing material.

What is the story behind your artwork?
Having already facilitated the making of panels by Jeparit Primary School and Horsham Uniting Youth, I was looking for inspiration for one about women. A couple of 'off the cuff' comments by women friends and family about what they would do 'one day' when they didn't have to look after children, husband or work led to this panel.
I asked a number of other women friends and family if they would like to contribute something that they would like to do if they did not have family and work calls on their time and if money was no object. Some also provided the image or the idea for the image for me to create. I was excited by the range of 'dreams' that came out. Most were a perfect fit for the person, but some did surprise me. I looked for groupings to aid the design and formed two groups:
new places, more creativity.
These are the creative activities:
•Archaeological digs
Creative sewing
•Dancing
•Drawing
•Further study
•Growing a (more) beautiful garden
•Landscape painting
•Pony Riding
•Relaxing in Nature
•Sailing
•Writing
It was refreshing to realize that so many of us just wanted more time to do things that we love doing now. All of us love being Mums and do not resent the time that that takes up, and some of us are closer to 'having it all' than we realize, by being able to grab some time to do the things that we love to do — even if we do so much that we get very tired.
Within the places were three countries, all of which I had visited years ago, making me feel very
fortunate. These are the places to visit:
•A new home closer to town
•England especially the Guards at Buckingham Palace
•Hawaii especially the dancing
•Lake Mungo (NSW, Australia) archaeololgical region or the antiquities
•Scotland especially Loch Ness
•Victoria's high country in East Gioosland and the Kiewa Valley and the Mt Cole Cottage
•The World!
Another thing I realized while sewing it all together, was that most of the things in this panel are things that I would love to have more time to do too. So I left the names off the specific activities and places. Perhaps others would feel that they would like to do some of the other things too. I hoped that as others see this, they might also appreciate the pleasures in life that we have and share in common with our friend and family circles.
And for those who have places they would like to visit- I hope that they will make it in the future.

Materials and Techniques Used: Cloth and heat bond
What is the story behind your artwork?
“This submission is in remembrance of the many people that lost their lives in 9-11-01 World Trade Center attacks; those that were in the buildings when the attacks happened, and those that rushed to their aid. We will forever hold their memories and remember the sacrifices made that day.”
