“Alcatraz Island offers a close-up look at the site of the first lighthouse and US built fort on the West Coast, the infamous federal penitentiary long off-limits to the public, and the 18 month occupation by Indians of All Tribes which saved the tribes. Rich in history, there is also a natural side to the Rock—gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare.”
“Alcatraz is best known for its notoriety during the penitentiary era, it has a rich historical tapestry including the American Indian Occupation, Civil War-era military history, and the racial segregation of its prisoners. Those themes, as well as the overall topic of incarceration and the meaning of freedom, have a lot of potential to appeal to a wide and diverse audience.”

About the Crissy Field Center:
Crissy Field Center is a dynamic hub of youth engagement for Golden Gate National Parks and a model program of the National Park Service. Crissy Field center programs encourage new generations to become bold leaders for thriving parks, healthy communities, and a more environmentally just society. With our focus on engaging people who traditionally have had little—if any—access to national parks, the Center has developed strong partnerships with schools and community centers in underserved areas, providing a majority of its programming for free or at low cost.

The Center’s state of the art, green education facility at East Beach consists of classrooms, labs and gathering space for youth enrolled in the Center’s camps, visiting on school field trips or with after school programs and youth leaders that help ensure that we are truly Parks For All, Forever!
