2010-2011 / Intern

Liudmila Potryvaeva

My name is Liudmila and I am from Russia. I jointed the Dream Rocket project soon after I had come to the USA in fall 2010 to become a graduate student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Acquaintance with the American culture and getting a new experience here were my key goals when I applied for a relevant scholarship. Being already here in the US I started looking for something special that was going on in Huntsville and I found the Dream Rocket project, which amazed me with its exciting idea and truly international scale. I guess that the space is a subject that thrills people’s minds everywhere. I also believe that space exploration is something that units the people from around the world with its ideas of peace, generosity, and collaboration.
I was lucky to meet Jennifer Marsh in person and learn more about the project. The Dream Rocket is a tangible expression of a hundred intangible but so important ideas about our world and its future.

Although I have enough experience of working in the nonprofit organizations in Russia, probably, no one project was so exciting to me before. It makes us to go beyond our daily routine activity, and it really inspires to dream. So, I was more than happy to distribute the information about the Dream Rocket in Russia and bring some participants from my country to this project.

About

International Fiber Collaborative, Inc

The IFC is a growing voice for collaborative public art projects around the world, we are dedicated to promoting understanding & appreciation of contemporary art & craft through educational experiences. We are committed to developing vital educational projects that elevate, expand, modernize & enhance the image of collaboration and education today. The IFC is able to share the power of collaboration and art, thanks to the support of generous individual donors.

The IFC is exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, making any donation tax deductible. Download our 501(c)(3) form.

Executive Summary
The International Fiber Collaborative, a 501c3, was founded by Ms. Jennifer Marsh in a response to the growing need within her community for supplemental arts education for public schools, community arts, and perhaps most importantly, an outlet for individuals around the world to find common ground. Using the arts as a vehicle for learning, collaboration, and inspiration, the IFC continues to address the increasing needs of society, communities, and individuals.

The IFC has completed many large scale community art projects that are not only unique, but have pushed the boundaries of collaboration in an unprecedented manner. International collaboration, exchange, and expression are cornerstones of IFC projects. A leader in the “smART” movement, the IFC utilizes specific project objectives to address universal values and local needs, such as the need for supplemental arts education for public schools. This practice of employing the arts as a vehicle for learning, change, and empowerment is a key value of all IFC endeavors.

In 2008, the IFC launched its current project, the Dream Rocket. The Dream Rocket project is a large scale collaborative fiber wrap. Up to 8,000 fiber panels will be created by individuals from various regions of the world, and then combined to wrap the Saturn V Moon Rocket in Huntsville, Alabama. The designated theme of the panels, “Dare to Dream”, challenges individuals to expand beyond the present state of the world and imagine the future. Perhaps most importantly, individuals are challenged to imagine their contribution to that future. These individual dreams and aspirations will combine to create a monumental work of fiber art of unprecedented size, providing a tangible demonstration of the beauty of individuals collaborating to meet universal challenges.

The IFC has successfully facilitated the creation of submission’s for The Dream Rocket project from 331 cities, 45 states, and 19 countries to date. The creation of the panels has been a catalyst for creativity in health care facilities, libraries, schools, museums, and for individuals. One aspect of this current project, has been designed to target the need for cross curricular arts education. Including lesson plans targeting the state mandated goal of Empathy will use the creation of crafts & textiles as a vehicle for learning through art. Much effort has also been invested to exchange artworks with partnering schools, giving the students insight to various living conditions, cultures and aspirations. Participating individuals, groups, and students will have the opportunity to be a part of a historical achievement in the arts.

In this time of record unemployment and joblessness, it is imperative that this opportunity be offered to schools, individuals, and groups at low cost with great exposure and recognition for their submission. The IFC is committed to providing an enriching arts education experience at little cost to participants. In order to meet this goal the IFC relies on the support of organizations and individuals who share the belief that the arts are for all, regardless of race, gender, or income. We thank these contributors for their support that they have provided for countless individuals who would not otherwise have access to the arts, and hope that we can continue to grow partners in this effort.

Sincerely,
International Fiber Collaborative, Inc.

Quotes from 'Dream Rocket' Participants:

“The Saturn V is the ideal icon to represent a big dream. This rocket was designed and built as a collaboration of nearly half-a-million people and allowed our human species to venture beyond our world and stand on ANOTHER - SURELY one of the biggest dreams of all time. ENABLING THE DREAMS of young people to touch this mighty rocket sends a powerful message in conjunction with creating an educational curriculum to engage students to embrace the power of learning through many important subjects”-Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium, New York

“Kisfaludy Sándor Grammar School is the one and only school in Hungary which can be proud of having creative students who readily worked together in order to create something new and thus express their understanding of the world. These students were taken part in the Dream Rocket project, Jennifer Marsh’s initiative, and its aim is to wrap a replica of a space shuttle named Saturn V with panels made by individuals from all over the world.”
-Hungarian Naplo Newspaper, June 17

“Mara  DuVernois,  a  fifth-grader  at  River  Heights,  hopes  to  see  tobacco smoking  end  to  improve  people’s  health.  She  created  a  square  with  a  no-smoking sign. “I don’t want to smoke” the 10 year-old said.”I don’t want anyone else to. There are  400,000  deaths  each  year  from  smoking-related  products.  Nicole  Herdahl,  10, also a fifth-grader at River Heights, used fabric markers to color her cloth square with a  red  cross,  a  symbol  of  medical  care  for  all  people  in  the  future.  “I  know  not everyone has a hospital to go to and have health care,” she said. “I want the world to have that.”-
