Martin Luther King Jr.
Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. There is perhaps no greater speech and no greater advocate for equality in all of American history. As a leader of courageous soldiers of justice his dream, his legacy of racial and social justice is still very much a part of our lives today. Ranging from international peace activists to communities battling poverty in America, people from all walks of life respond to Dr. King’s timeless message and call for a better world through nonviolence. To commemorate Dr. King's life and legacy, students will participate in an art project at Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site. The project will provide opportunities for students to learn about and creatively interpret Dr. King's contributions to civil rights and the ongoing struggle for equality.

Title: Blast Off Into the Future
Dream Theme: Community/Imagination
Materials and Techniques Used: Fabric, bleach, recycled clothing, beads, thread, bedazzler. Hand sewn except for the rocket, which we had a machine for.
What is your group’s artwork submission about? Our quilt started out as individual panels depicting imagination and when we sewed everything together, it took on a new sense of community. We chose to tie everything together with a rocket since we made this quilt for a rocket.
Does your group have any ideas of other projects and/or places to display artwork?
We could hang art in many places around Madison, WI.
Right now they are renovating a library on the Capital Square. Since it is completely empty inside, there is a collaborative art show with the UW and artists in the community.
Location Ideas for other displays: Our club, public schools, MSCR, Capitol Square, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (kids space), libraries
Participants:
Brittany Peterson & Sarah Hemm (instructors), Taleaha Carter, Esperanza Cisneros, Barbara Simmons, Erianna Washington, Jaylah Harris, Diana Bell, Desina Stevenson, and Anthony
Did your group enjoy working on this project?
We could not stop working on this quilt because we kept thinking of ways to make it better. This was our first big collaborative project and everyone's first time sewing.

Great Job to Mundy Library in Syracuse, New York for your award of 50+ artwork spots to participate in the Dream Rocket Project with your after school programs.
Thank you goes to Tina Limpert for her hard work and coordination in working with the after school programs at Mundy Library

Title: “Kids Need Green”
Dream Theme: Conservation/Nature/Animals

What is your group’s artwork about? “We wanted everyone to know that we love the outdoors and we think it is important to have time to play and enjoy the outdoors and nature while growing up. We come to camp at Ruffner Mountain to hike, play, and learn outdoors. We think that every kid deserves and needs the opportunity to explore and play outside every day.”

Techniques & Materials Used: Fabric crayon on calico
What is your group’s artwork about?
“Our first session was a planning one. We began by listing what we most like about our church and what we would like to see in the future. Then we fitted these into the mission statement of our church "Worshipping, witnessing and serving in the way of Christ" which provided the three part structure for the design. The background we filled with people.
Our second session was putting this onto the calico with fabric crayons. Later it was ironed and a border added. The panel was displayed in the church's 'art space' for the month of November.”

★By the Members of the Westchester Art Therapy Association (WATA) created this panel.
From Mamaroneck, New York
Dream Theme - Imaginationa / The Arts
★Title - "Imagination The Portal to Creativity"
While not all members of WATA were present for the creation of this panel we hope it speaks to the collective voice of our group.
★As art therapists we recognize, the importance of one's imagination and creativity for invention, research, and working through social issues, environmental issues, self-exploration and self-awareness.
"Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight."(www.americanarttherapyassociation.org/aata-aboutus.html)
★Our dream for the future is that the creative arts will be recognized as one of the primary forces of our growth and development as individuals, as a country and community of countries-our world and our universe. Through mainstreaming the use of the arts, incorporating them into our everyday life, we are enabled (as will be future generations) to explore, express and create new ideas, as well as to learn more about others and ourselves.
★Imagination and creativity play a role in every aspect of our lives. We hope this is not overlooked. Our dream is that more art making opportunities are afforded to future generations in order to allow imaginations to flourish. With value placed on imagination and creativity, we can continue to be leaders in inventions (medical, technology, ecological, etc), research, working through social, community and world issues, environmental issues, as well as supporting personal awareness, growth and development.
★When we use our imagination amazing things happen.
