Created by the Friends of Winfield Public Library in Winfield, Kansas
Organizer: Janice Rhodes
Title: Even a Library Needs Friends
Dream Theme: Dreams and Wishes / Community
Friends of Winfield Public Library in Winfield, Kansas
Materials and Techniques Used: Cotton fabrics were pieced for the front and back and layered with batting and then tied and invisibly stitched to hold the layers together. The wording and all the dreams were printed onto muslin fabric and adhered to the pieced cotton backgrounds and stitched in place. Some ribbons were appliquéd with fabric glue also.

Participants: Sue Birney, Special event coordinator at Winfield Public Library.
Janice Rhodes, President of Friends, created the panel.
Dreams were submitted by approximately ten Friends members.

Did you enjoy this project? It was a way for the group to begin thinking more seriously about the types of remodeling changes they'd like to see occur at the library as well as generating long range changes and wishes for the library.
What is your artwork about? Winfield, Kansas Public Library is preparing to celebrate its 100th Birthday on January 19, 2013. It will include A Centennial Literary Feast in the library stacks as well as a community wide reception to be held on the actual 100th year date of February 26 to which former board members, former library directors, and the entire community will be divided. Also during this 100th year of its existence, the library will be undergoing major rennovations and remodeling. Under these circumstances, the Friends felt it beneficial for members to express their wishes for the future of the Winfield Public Library.

Title: Have Happiness
Theme: Peace

What do you want others to know about your artwork? Our work is about different characteristics a person should have while working together.  We want people to know what’s on the inside not the outside.

Martin Luther King Jr.
Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. There is perhaps no greater speech and no greater advocate for equality in all of American history. As a leader of courageous soldiers of justice his dream, his legacy of racial and social justice is still very much a part of our lives today.  Ranging from international peace activists to communities battling poverty in America, people from all walks of life respond to Dr. King’s timeless message and call for a better world through nonviolence.  To commemorate Dr. King's life and legacy, students will participate in an art project at Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site. The project will provide opportunities for students to learn about and creatively interpret Dr. King's contributions to civil rights and the ongoing struggle for equality.

Sponsor: Sarah Hemm

Supporting Organization: Allied Drive Art -After School Art Program

Title: Blast Off Into the Future

Dream Theme: Community/Imagination

Materials and Techniques Used: Fabric, bleach, recycled clothing, beads, thread, bedazzler. Hand sewn except for the rocket, which we had a machine for.

What is your group’s artwork submission about? Our quilt started out as individual panels depicting imagination and when we sewed everything together, it took on a new sense of community. We chose to tie everything together with a rocket since we made this quilt for a rocket.

Does your group have any ideas of other projects and/or places to display artwork?
We could hang art in many places around Madison, WI.
Right now they are renovating a library on the Capital Square. Since it is completely empty inside, there is a collaborative art show with the UW and artists in the community.

Location Ideas for other displays: Our club, public schools, MSCR, Capitol Square, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (kids space), libraries

Participants:
Brittany Peterson & Sarah Hemm (instructors), Taleaha Carter, Esperanza Cisneros, Barbara Simmons, Erianna Washington, Jaylah Harris, Diana Bell, Desina Stevenson, and Anthony

Did your group enjoy working on this project?
We could not stop working on this quilt because we kept thinking of ways to make it better. This was our first big collaborative project and everyone's first time sewing.

Dream Theme: Community
Participants: By Horsham Uniting Church Youth ; Ellena, Felicity, Jiarra, Lauren, Linda, Lucy, Michael, Peter, and Tim - and facilitated by Ginny, border by Jan.
Techniques & Materials Used: Fabric crayon on calico
What is your group’s artwork about?
“Our first session was a planning one. We began by listing what we most like about our church and what we would like to see in the future. Then we fitted these into the mission statement of our church "Worshipping, witnessing and serving in the way of Christ" which provided the three part structure for the design. The background we filled with people.
Our second session was putting this onto the calico with fabric crayons. Later it was ironed and a border added. The panel was displayed in the church's 'art space' for the month of November.”

Title: "Let's plant a seed of kindness"
Dream Theme: Peace
Materials & Techniques Used: Art appliqué, textile fabrics
What is your club's artwork about?
The girl, standing on the Globe, symbolizes that the most important people on the Earth are children.
That is the children who are to plant the seeds of kindness, which will become a snowdrop — the symbol
of purity and revival.
The dreams of the great future may swing as a cork-tumbler, but they are still firm and steady, because there must be just a few things for the real happiness: warm sunbeams, pure seawater and the space that is explored by the good people.

★By the Members of the Westchester Art Therapy Association (WATA) created this panel.
From Mamaroneck, New York
Dream Theme - Imaginationa / The Arts
Title - "Imagination The Portal to Creativity"
While not all members of WATA were present for the creation of this panel we hope it speaks to the collective voice of our group.
As art therapists we recognize, the importance of one's imagination and creativity for invention, research, and working through social issues, environmental issues, self-exploration and self-awareness.
"Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight."(www.americanarttherapyassociation.org/aata-aboutus.html)
Our dream for the future is that the creative arts will be recognized as one of the primary forces of our growth and development as individuals, as a country and community of countries-our world and our universe. Through mainstreaming the use of the arts, incorporating them into our everyday life, we are enabled (as will be future generations) to explore, express and create new ideas, as well as to learn more about others and ourselves.
Imagination and creativity play a role in every aspect of our lives. We hope this is not overlooked. Our dream is that more art making opportunities are afforded to future generations in order to allow imaginations to flourish. With value placed on imagination and creativity, we can continue to be leaders in inventions (medical, technology, ecological, etc), research, working through social, community and world issues, environmental issues, as well as supporting personal awareness, growth and development.
★When we use our imagination amazing things happen.
